Shoreline With Four Boats, by Edith Penman, Amer., (1860-1929)
Etching, ca.1890's, plate 2-1/2 x 4-3/16, signed in the plate and in pencil lower right, on cream wove simili vellum paper, toned within old mat opening and corners from acidic mount and laid down. A lovely small pastoral shoreline scene, typical of Penman's landscape views. Though born in England, Edith Penman attended Cooper Union and was a member of the Byrdcliffe Arts & Crafts community in present day Woodstock. She was accomplished in ceramics, in addition to her many prints and paintings of landscapes and floral subjects. Many of her etchings were published by Christian Klackner. and she exhibited as a member of the New York Etching Club. I have not encountered this print by Penman before.
