"Robert Walter Weir" by J. Alden Weir
Robert Walter Weir, Drypoint, 1891, Ed. unknown, Z. 61, 7-15/16 x 6, a rare early first state lifetime impression, before the monogrammed signature in the plate upper right, signed J. Alden Weir by the artist in pencil, notated "Uncle Rob" lower left margin by the artist's daughter Caro, on thick cream oatmeal laid paper with small margins as issued, traces of old hinges and glue in margin corners verso. A particularly rich impression of this scarce and deftly rendered portrait of J. Alden Weir's father Robert Walter Weir, respected Hudson River school painter and drawing master at West Point in the mid 19th century, teacher of James McNeil Whistler. Ex-coll. descendants of Caroline Weir Ely Smith.
