Lithograph, 1942, Edition unknown, 6-15/16 x 5-3/4, a fine impression, two pale fox marks to margins, some faint foxing to sheet verso, old hinges to top corners recto, signed, titled and dated 1942 in pencil, on warm white wove RIVES paper 11-1/2 x 8. Robert Jordan, American war hero, enlisted during WWII serving as a tail gunner, and after 11 missions was shot down over Hanover Germany. Liberated at war's end and awarded the Purple Heart. He studied art and became a well respected painter of American Landscape, and later a professor of Art History at Washington University in St. Louis. Ward has created a memorable portrait of Jordan stoic and contemplative, having parachuted into the bombed out German landscape.
