"Road in the Campagna, Rome" by George Elbert Burr, Amer., (1859-1939)
Etching, ca. 1905, S.238, ed. 100?, 4-15/16 x 6-7/8, on cream laid J Head watermarked paper, trace of tone in mat opening, signed & titled in pencil. An earlier Italian subject by the artist based on studies from a five year European tour with his wife in the late 1880's. Born in 1859, Burr could recall Seymour Haden's lecture tours of America in the early 1880's. His career as an artist was firmly rooted in both the 19th and 20th centuries. This is a beautiful and near pristine impression of this print.
