"A Brilliant Sunset" by John H. Bostwick, Amer., (Active mid 19th Cent.)
Etching, ca. 1883, ed. unknown, image 5-3/16 x 11-1/8, unsigned as issued, for Part VIII of an unknown 19th century portfolio, on warm white laid paper with large margins. Some rippling in image from the printing process, visible in raking light. Though the publication itself is not named, the original descriptive label included with this print states the artist was born in Ravena, Ohio; that this was his first published etching, and that the building pictured in this print was the Clark Insulate Electric Wire Company in Bristol, PA. The dramatic back lighting and attention to both texture and detail in this print create an iconic and romantic vision of early American industry.
