"Logging Train (For Calendar)" by Dale Nichols, Amer. (1904-1995)
Lithograph, extensively hand colored in oil and varnished by the artist, circa 1940's, 9-7/16 x 13-7/16, signed in pencil, and hastily annotated with mispellings verso: "Finished color on Loging train for Calender- from Dale Nichols". Printed directly on a pebbled illustration board, There is a barely noticeable repaired 1" tear to the left of the fishing figure at lower right and a professionally repaired loss at the bottom edge of the illustration board just touching the image at right of center. As a commissioned commercial illustration, it must have knocked around a bit. I have only seen one other hand colored example of this lithograph. This impression has been so extensively reworked in color, that even with the discrete damage it remains a striking and special piece with a unique history by Nichols.
