"Nantucket Windmill and Fence" by Addison LeBoutillier, Amer., (1872-1951)
Etching, ca. 1920's, unsigned, 4-15/16 x 6-15/16, on cream laid Arches paper. Addison LeBoutillier was an accomplished Boston area artist and architect who is best known today as a designer for Grueby Pottery, producing their famous Pine Tree Freize tiles as well as vase designs. His etchings show early scenes of Nantucket and Andover, Massachusetts, the wood frame architecture of which LeBoutillier wrote a book about. While he created a number of prints, today etchings by LeBoutillier are not commonly encountered. This print shows the famous Nantucket, Mass Windmill, built in 1745-6 by Nathan Wilbur with wood salvaged from shipwrecks. This structure still stands today, and remains a beloved island attraction.
