"Garden Flowers" by Margaret J. Patterson, Amer., (1867-1950)
Color Woodcut, 1921, Ed. 100, but fewer printed, 10-1/2 x 7-1/4, a particularly bright, luminous impression; with hand painted additions to the green stalks and leaves by the artist, unsigned, on thick fibrous cream japan, and trimmed to the subject by the artist, as was common. This was purchased back in 1986 or 87 from Steven Thomas's first big Margaret Patterson list. I was so excited I drove all the way to Vermont to view the collection and took polaroids. That gives you some idea of how long ago it was. I've enjoyed owning Garden Flowers these past 30 plus years, Patterson's vibrant colors and beautiful compositions so strongly evoke the teachings of Arthur Wesley Dow, they still never cease to give me a thrill. The lack of a pencil signature pedigree allowed me to purchase this print back then, and I hope it will allow a new collector to enjoy it now. ON HOLD
