Regular price $125
Soft Ground Etching, Ca. 1930's, Ed. unknown, 9-13/16 x 7-15/16, signed in pencil, on thin buff wove paper with small but full margins. Kalman Oswald lived with his wife Helmi in New York and Massachusetts. He attended the New School in New York, and favored portraits, nudes, still life, and both urban and rural landscape sujects in paint and print. The number of  prints he made is not known; I have had a linocut and the present print. He was an excellent draftsman, and this thoughtful self portait by Oswald offers an excellent example of linear and tonal work in soft ground,  allowing diffuse edges to etched lines and textural passages of differing values more akin to pencil or charcoal drawing; qualities valued by more traditional painters who turn to printmaking.
