"Enee Aux Enfers" by Honore Daumier, Fr., (1808-1879)
Hand Colored Lithograph, 1841-2, from "Histoire Ancienne", DR. 941, printed by Aubert & C., 9-11/16 x 7-13/16, on cream wove paper, a 1" repaired tear bottom margin center edge. That Daumier was known to indulge in a little black humor, albeit moral or political, is an understatement. His humor retains it's sharp edge today as in his own time, and even when an image is difficult to look at, as here, he taps into universal truths in his observations on the brutality of human nature without losing sight of humors' power to foment change and offer the hope for redemption.
