August Lepere was one of the greatest French printmakers of the late 19th century. He was amazingly prolific; quite adept at etching and drypoint, but had a unparalleled facility for wood engraving, producing a great number,  occasionally  in color, and is noted for creating the most subtle effects and fine detail with seeming ease. Today the "Quartier Des Gobelins", shown here in Lepere's etching, is on the left bank of the Seine, in the 13th arrondissmente, and home to the central  Asian community of Paris.
