"Quartier Des Gobelins" by August Lepere, Fr., (1849-1918)
Etching, 1896, Lb. 96, IV? state, imp. by Delatre, pub. by Gazette des Beaux-Arts, ed. ca. 1,500, 9-1/8 x 6, signed in the plate, on cream laid paper. Paper tape to right margin edge, verso. L:epere was one of the greatest etchers of the late 19th century, amazingly prolific as a print maker, he was equally adept at etching and drypoint, but had with a stellar facility for wood engraving, at which he excelled, occasionally printing in color, creating the most subtle effects and fine detail with seeming ease. Today the "Quartier Des Gobelins", on the left bank of the Seine, in the 13th arrondissmente, home to the central Asian community of Paris.
