"Basalt Column Mountain and Beached Boats, Iceland" by Sperry Andrews, Amer., (1917-2005)
Regular price
$650
Gouache, 1941, vignetted on sheet, signed and dated 41 in gouache l.l., image 6-7/8 x 8-3/4, sheet 8-1/4 x 107/8, on textured cream wove watercolor paper, with a study in brown gouache of two men by a wood stove, verso ref. span 9148. So far I've not been able to identify this distinctive basalt column rock formation from photographs, and the artist left no notation of location. While Sperry Andrews work remains distinctively his own, his meticulous rendering and Iceland topography here remind one of Rockwell Kent, whom Andrews would later befriend and visit.
