"The Monongahela at Morgantown" by Blanche Lazzell, Amer., (1878-1956)
Vine Charcoal Drawing with traces of Pencil,1934, the finished Preparatory Drawing for the White Line Color Woodcut of the same name; image 12-3/8 x 14-3/8, sheet 12-5/8 x 14-5/8, with penciled marginalia of building details into both the bottom margin edge below the ruled border and the right margin; multiple tack holes to the four corners, a few spots of foxing in the image, on textured cream laid charcoal paper, signed and dated in pencil, with color notations for the woodcut throughout the image. This powerful modernist drawing presents the genesis of one of Lazzell's most famous compositions; an American masterwork of white line color woodcut, the medium for which she is justly best known.
