"Venice - The Grand Canal" by James Alphege Brewer, Eng., (1881-1946)

Regular price $150

Etching, ca. 1924-25, Ed. unknown, 5-1/8 x 8-1/4, signed and titled in pencil, on heavy cream wove J Head paper, a pale trace of mat line. Brewer was born in London to a family of artists, and spent most of his career based in Acton, west of London, excelling at architectural subjects, in particular the churches found all over Europe. His prints feature a dramatic use of light with strong contrast of dark and light, and this view of the Grand Canal in Venice is a particularly fine example, suggesting the monumental sweep of this grand view within a small scale. I've just corrected several cataloguing & biographic details in this entry courtesy of Brewer scholar, cataloguer  Ben Dunham, author of the recent indespensable catalogue "Etched in Memory: The Elevated Art of J. Alphege Brewer".
