"Sailboat and Gull" by Ferol Sibley Warthen
Color Woodcut, 1953, printed 1978, ed. small, 7-1/8 x 7-3/16, on thick fibrous cream laid japan paper, signed, titled, and dated in pencil, and again in pen verso. Warthen learned the white line technique directly from Blanche Lazzell in Provincetown, and she continued to print until her passing in 1987, bringing this indigenous printing tradition forward nearly to the last decade of the 20th century. Today Warthen's prints are highly regarded, but are not common; being printed in small numbers due to the labor intensive process of the white line technique. With it's strong composition and carefully considered colors, Sailboat and Gull is a fine example by this master of the Provincetown Print.
