"Robert Walter Weir" by J. Alden Weir, Amer., (1852-1919)
Robert Walter Weir, Drypoint, 1891, Ed. unknown, Z. 61, 7-15/16 x 6, a rare early first state lifetime impression, before the monogrammed signature in the plate upper right, signed J. Alden Weir by the artist in pencil, and notated "Uncle Rob" lower left margin by the artist's daughter Caro, on thick cream oatmeal laid paper with small margins as issued, traces of old hinges and glue in margin corners verso. A particularly rich impression of this scarce and forceful portrait by J. Alden Weir of his own father Robert Walter Weir, the respected Hudson River school painter and drawing master at West Point in the mid 19th century; and notably the early teacher of James McNeil Whistler. A historically significant Weir family association - legacy print, descended in the artist's family. Ex-coll. descendants of Caroline Weir Ely Smith.
