"Butterflies & Catapillers" by Enid Marx, Eng., (1902-1998)
Hand Colored Wood Engraving, 1952, ed. unknown but likely small, 4-1/4 x 7-1/2, signed & dated in pencil, on thin smooth wove simili japan paper. Mat lines penciled in around image, some wrinkling to sheet in image upper left & center, not obtrusive. Marx attended the Central School of Arts & Crafts and the Royal College of Art, and was best known as a designer of patterned fabrics, book jackets and posters for the London Transport. She was awarded the distinction of being a Royal Designer for Industry, and her design work seen literally everywhere. A large exhibition was held in London in 2018, with a new book on her life and art. Her prints are uncommon, and this is a very fine example of her work.
