"The Grill, Venice" by Ernest D. Roth, Amer., (1879-1964)
Etching, 1913, 10-7/16 x 7-15/16, signed, titled & dated in pencil, on antique cream laid paper with a crown & scepter watermark, small discrete clear linear acretion left of shadowed figure to right in courtyard, small loss to top left margin corner. A fine impression of this beautiful print, showing a weathered facade on a Venetian canal with it's distinctive oval windows to each side and arched iron grill over the darkened entrance leading to a sunlit interior courtyard with figures; a pictoral device frequently explored by Whistler, who's legacy and example Roth drew great inspiration from over his own long and distinguished career.
