"Bloody Sword Flag of Texas,1835" by William Kent, (Amer.,1919-2012) 

Slate Print, 1964, Ed. of 22 on various papers and fabrics, signed, titled, dated & annotated "mono print" in black ink, 13" x 19-3/4", on printed cotton fabric with a small repeating CUSHION COMFORT MADE IN USA pattern. The fabric Kent chose for this impression of the print promises CUSHION COMFORT MADE IN USA, a message in marked contrast to the bloodied sword and arm which brandishes it, based upon the 1835 flag created by William S. Brown and said to have been flown at the convention to declare Texas's independence as a republic in 1836. Today of course,over fifty years after Kent created this powerful print, the bloodied sword and arm, and ominous black flag, carry a much more provocative, contemporary and sinister association.
