Woman Picking Apples with Faun, by Ilonka Karasz, Hungarian-Amer., (1896-1981)
Lithograph, 1930's, 12-5/16 x 9-3/16, Ed. unknown, signed l.r. and no. 31 l. l. in pencil with framers notations along bottom margin, on textured cream laid paper 17 x 12-13/16, pale mat line, some pale foxing to margins, and darkly toned margins verso where not covered by old piece of mat board between print and original corrugated cardboard backing. A wonderful subject by Karasz, famous as both industrial designer of housewares, wallpaper, furniture, as well as designing more covers for the New Yorker than anyone, though Arthur Getz may be in the running too. Karasz's prints were well received but are not commonly seen. in 34 years of dealing, I'm aware of perhaps 5. I don't believe her complete original graphic production has been catalogued. Her graphic style draws strongly from folk art with a modernist awareness. This is a scarce and very fine example of her work.
