"Seated Woman With Head" by Morris Kantor, Russian-Amer., (1896-1974)
Regular price
$950
Pen & Ink Drawing, 7-1/4 x 10-1/2, Signed in ink on white wove paper, stray ink drip and small loss to upper right sheet corner, small stain upper center of sheet. A fascinating drawing by Kantor for the similarity to Gorky's early drawings in it's use of contour line, flat cubist form, and cross hatching to achieve a value and texture. While there was no title accompanying this drawing, it may relate to a war time painting by the artist. Whatever it's specific meaning, the startling head with it's gaping mouth and face half in shadow remains as tragically eloquent today as when Kantor made this powerful drawing.
