Lithograph, as published in La Caricature 12 Mai 1831, Plate No. 56., 12-1/4 x 9-1/2, signed & titled in the stone beneath the image with publication line, pale water stain to top margin, a soft centerfold, associated repaired short edge tear at right sheet edge, handling creases and another fold higher up visible from verso, on wove paper. The caption reads: "Choui______i! …………Put! Put put! ...Pan!! ...pan, pan, pan! Brrrrrr..pan, papapapa pan! Pan!!,,,pan!pouf! Pouf!Gatapatapouf!!!!", transcribing the sounds of this French fireworks display. The decorative objects shown illumined rocketing upwards in the sky symbolize an attack on the privileges of peerage and government members, and denunciation of the principle of non-intervention in external affairs, or so I gather from wikipedia., as i wasn't there in 1831! The lively dynamics of this composition, with it's brilliant whites for the fireworks truely seem brighter than the paper they are (not) printed on. The nuanced values inherent in the draftsman's skill, are masterful, and though it's Grandvilles design, I could find no mention of the first name of the artist who drew (after) Granville's original design onto the stone. I'd like to give this person their due by including their full name, but the internet is all fee for subtle knowledge in these days of proprietary online corporate sales platforms.......
