"Cerfs Indochinois 1" by Joseph Hecht, Polish-Fr., (1891-1951)

Engraving, 1950, ed. of 200 in the 1st. state, pub. by La Guild de Gravure, Geneva, T./R. & P. 370. This is one of 72 imps. (60 plus 12 proofs) in the 2nd. state with more horizontal lines added along the bottom edge. This impression is 10-3/16 x 13-9/16, and is signed & numbered in pencil, on thick cream wove paper. There is a short professionally repaired tear at right center edge of the very wide full margins. Joseph Hecht's early encouragement of Stanley William Hayter's print making helped lead to the founding of Atelier 17, Hayter's legendary experimental etching studio in Paris and New York.  Hecht was a master of the difficult medium of engraving, and nature and animals were favorite subjects. "Cerfs Indochinois 1" is a fine, well composed example of his distinctive work.
