"The Herring Fleet, Gloucester" by Gabrielle Deveaux Clements, Amer., (1858 -1948)

Etching, 5-7/16 x 7-7/8, signed in pencil, on cream wove similli vellum paper, lightly toned within mat opening, small light traces of glue and wear to corner tips of margins, a light, bearly noticeable diagonal crease to upper ight margin corner. Clements studied with Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy, and Bouguereau at the Academie Julian in Paris. Stephan Parrish taught her to etch in 1883, when she began to exhibit her prints. The painter and etcher Ellen Day Hale was her life long companion. Clements was a respected painter, etcher and teacher, active in various art societies over several decades. Here's a beautiful signed impression of this image which appears to be uncommon though present in the collections of the Smithsonian and Cornell museums. Of particular interest here is her probable use of deep open bite in the etching process to obtain the gleaming light reflections off the hulls of the two white fishing boats and one small row boat far right. Just a stunning print.
