Drypoint, 1940, ed. of 250 for A.A.A., 13-7/8 x 9-11/16, signed in pencil, on thick cream wove paper. Some cockling to margins. Lawrence Kupferman is renoun for his distinctive precisionist  drypoints of victorian houses and Boston neighborhoods, most executed while employed on the W.P.A. in Boston. With their near photographic precison and powerful raking light, they are remarkable technical achievements, and added to this there is a lonely haunted nostalgic qualty which brings to mind the work of Edward Hopper. Kuperman's later work embraced both surrealism and abstraction, but his love of sharp detail and structure remained undiminished. This print, published by Associated American Artist, is an excellent example of his early work.
